A few basic tools, supplemented by several specialized tools, are required to build a switch. At the top of the are a fine toothed hacksaw and a pair of vise-grip pliers. Immediately below them are a sharp wood chisel and the track gauge. On the left hand side are a large and small flat file and a flat needle file. A regular flat screwdriver and a fine screwdriver are next to medium needle nose pliers and flush cut rail nippers. Next is a smooth face hammer, a medium nail set, a metal scribe, and a 6" metal ruler. A 12 foot tape measure is below the scribe. The relatively special tools are a pair of calipers, a set of number drill bits, and a 2-56 tap below the box of drills. A battery power drill finishes out the hand tools. A bench vise and a bench grinding wheel are the only other tools needed.
